New York City is situated in the North Eastern part of the United States of America, in the state of New York, along the Hudson River. It is built around three islands - Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island. It includes five boroughs - The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

These boroughs are situated within five counties - New York County, Bronx County, Kings County, Queens County, and Richmond County. It is roughly 304.8 square miles, with about 8.2 million people living in the area. It was the first capital city according to the Constitution.

The City of New York is situated midway between Boston and Washington D.C and on the north eastern direction of the United States of America. Owing to its significant location on the natural harbor of Hudson River, this city has developed rapidly in trading activities. New York city has been basically constructed on the three islands namely Long island, Staten island and Manhattan island.

New York is made up of 5 counties of Queens County, Richmond County, New York County, Kings County and the Bronx County which is governed by a unique form of administration called the Burroughs. New York City is comprised of 5 such Burroughs. Each of these has a unique history and character of its own.

New York City has a population of over 8.2 million for an area of 789.43 sq.km of land. It may be interesting to note that 36% of the city's population is born outside United States and more than 170 languages are spoken in this cultural hot pot.

There are more than 40 million people from around the world that visit New York City each year. Some of the major attractions this city offers are the Empire State Building, Elis Island, Broadway theatre productions, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, Washington Square Park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Garden, and Luxury shopping along Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue.



Apart from these, events such as the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, the Tribeca Film Festival, and free performances at Central Park during Summerstage attract many tourists. There have been many cultural activities that have originated in New York City such as the Harlem Renaissance in literature and visual arts, abstract expressionism in painting, hip hop, punk, salsa, and Tin Pan Alley in music, and the Broadway Theatre.

Being a global centre for education, politics, finance, art and theatre, New York City is home to many cultural movements. One such was being the Harlem Renaissance which gave recognition and established African American literature. It is the home to the New York School of art which promotes forms of abstract expression. The world has also seen the origin of punk, hip-hop, and salsa in New York. New York City also houses major art, fashion and theatre houses. Broadway, which happens to be the dream destination of many artists is the longest street in the world which is officially Highway 9.

The Broadway theatres were also home to a new form of stage, being the musicals. New York City is also the second largest centre in the film industry. Fifth and Madison Avenues house some major fashions houses and some of popular shopping destinations. Times Square, Empire State Building, Ellis Island, the Bronx Zoo, Central Park and Metropolitan Museum of Art are some of the popular tourist spots.
