Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Aromatherapy essential oils and aromatherapy in general is a hot marketing term today. You can go to any discount store or drug store and pick up any number of products that are labeled “aromatherapy,” from candles, to bubble bath, to room deodorizers. Unfortunately, while many of these products might smell nice, they are not natural and not derived from essential oils.

Wikipedia defines aromatherapy as, “a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person's mood or health.”1

Anyone can use essential oils, but “aromatherapy” means knowing (1) which oil(s) to use for which condition, (2) how much, (3) how to apply them, and (4) how often.

While this may sound a bit intimidating, it’s not really. Most of the information you’re looking for can be found here and is presented in a way that is easy, for even the beginning essential oil user to understand. Each time you return to this website, you’ll learn more, until gradually, you’ll find yourself becoming your own aromatherapist!

Besides this website, the two most important resources you will need are:

  • Top quality essential oils
  • The “Essential Oils Desk Reference”
  • The EDR (Essential Oils Desk Reference) will tell you how to use pure, therapeutic grade essential oils in aromatherapy.

This is probably a good place to emphasize that the information you find here is for educational purposes only. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prescribe for any medical condition for which one should see a medical doctor.

There are countries (for example, France, Ecuador) where medical doctors can freely use essential oils in their practice. Here in the United States, the number of doctors who are knowledgeable about essential oils is quite small, but is growing. Meanwhile, educating yourself is the quickest way to become your own aromatherapist.

With the right resources, most people can easily become their own aromatherapy expert.
